A Good Remarticle for Comment Trolls Like Me

Today, I read an interesting "remarticle" (Reminder + Article) about commenting etiquette. You could find it on CNN.com

Summarized and interpreted, here are the key points:

1. Be polite in the face of factual errors, fallacies, mistakes or even grammatical errors. Don't skim through an article and point out a simple grammatical mistake on line 34, paragraph 4. People make mistakes (even professional writers do).

2. When you comment on something be sure to add "value". And by value, we're not talking about your high, mighty and omnipotent opinion.

3. Stop marketing blatantly (I'm a little guilty of this). People think that shoving products down people's throats through the comments section will get people to buy from them. Remember, people buy from people and companies they trust. Prove that you can be trust first by adding value. Stop posting URLs to your Viagra.com website.

4. Don't just repeat what a previous commenter said. Like we said, add value to the conversation.

5. Don't be an a-hole.

Here's what I've added:

6. Posting links are ok, if the links point to something which WILL interest the readers. It doesn't mean that if the article is about SEO that you should be posting about an article you've written about SEO or for heaven's sake your SEO company. If you offer an insightful comment, people will pay attention to you and click on your name to see what you have to offer.

7. Never get angry. In some instances getting angry is OK. But for most instances, getting angry is about losing control over yourself. Find a way to dispute the point without turning into Conan the Internet Barbarian.

8. If possible use humor. People like a good laugh, specially in dreary articles.

Now, back to my SEO commenting routine....
